Eagle Engineering and Consulting have added the new Leica RTC500 to our reality capture equipment, making us one of the first companies in Canada to put Leica’s latest terrestrial 3D LiDAR laser scanner to work.
The RTC500 uses LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to capture accurate 3D point cloud data for buildings, infrastructure, construction sites, and other existing conditions. It replaces our Leica RTC360 and expands what our field teams can do, particularly when projects take us outdoors in Canadian conditions.
Extending the 3D Laser Scanning Season
One of the most useful improvements for our work is the RTC500’s ability to operate in temperatures as low as −20°C. While weather and site conditions still determine when our teams can scan safely and effectively, the lower operating temperature gives us greater flexibility to collect accurate 3D data outdoors throughout the year.
For clients with construction schedules, infrastructure projects, or existing-condition surveys that cannot simply wait for warmer weather, that flexibility can make a meaningful difference.
More Accurate, Efficient Reality Capture
The RTC500 improves both the quality of the data we can collect and the efficiency of field workflows. Greater point cloud and angular accuracy can produce cleaner 3D geometry, giving project teams greater confidence when using scan data for measurements, existing-condition drawings, computer-aided design (CAD), building information modelling (BIM), and detailed analysis.
Its Visual Inertial System (VIS) helps automatically align scans as our team moves through a site, supporting efficient field collection and reducing the processing required to integrate individual scans. Automatic self-calibration also helps our field teams maintain scanner accuracy without interrupting collection for manual calibration procedures.
The RTC500 can be used for a wide range of 3D laser scanning applications, including buildings and facilities, construction sites, infrastructure, industrial environments, floor flatness surveys, existing-condition documentation, and detailed measurements for CAD and BIM.

The scanner also captures high-resolution HDR imagery alongside the point cloud, providing clear visual context when teams need to review existing conditions back in the office. Together, these capabilities help us capture more complete information during the initial site visit and reduce the risk of having to return to collect missing data.
Continuing to Invest in Better Ways to Capture the Built Environment
Eagle Engineering and Consulting has been evolving to solve complex project challenges since 1989. Adding the RTC500 continues that approach by giving our teams another way to collect accurate, detailed site information safely and efficiently.
With our RTC360 now retired, the RTC500 becomes an important part of our terrestrial 3D laser scanning capabilities for projects across Canada and the United States.
